“Writing and Storytelling Remain the Most Valuable Parts of the Process” — The Chip Critic Director Varun Sharma on AI, Animation, and Winning the MetaMorph Award

The Chip Critic has received a Winner Award in the Animation Category.

What was the original creative spark behind your film, and why did you choose to tell this story using AI?

Varun Sharma: I used to work part-time as an assistant store manager at 7-Eleven. The film was sparked by common scenarios I experienced there; I wanted to integrate that humor and the practical, day-to-day life situations that people can easily connect with.

How did working with AI change your role as a filmmaker, artist or storyteller during the process?

Varun Sharma: This is actually my first animated film. While I am a filmmaker experienced in production and writing, I had never animated before. AI acted as a tool that empowered me to go beyond my usual capabilities with a smaller budget and crew. It allowed me to handle the character building and visualization entirely, proving that the writing and storytelling remain the most valuable parts of the process.

Where did you feel most in control of the work, and where did the technology surprise you?

Varun Sharma: I was most in control of the storytelling and writing. I was particularly surprised by the developments in tools like Nano banana, especially regarding consistent characters and environment backgrounds.

What part of the film feels most personal to you?

Varun Sharma: The store worker is the most personal character for me. He is often irritated and trapped by protocols and rules. He tries to dominate through words and body language because he knows he is limited in what he can actually do. That sense of being stuck within a system feels very real.

What does being part of MetaMorph 2026 mean to you at this moment in the evolution of AI storytelling?

Varun Sharma: It is a huge motivation. While AI is currently in a complex zone regarding legalities, MetaMorph provides a vital platform for creators. It has given me the spark to develop even longer stories and visual identities, and I look forward to participating every year.
